What WiseWill is for
Most people meet estate law at a hard moment: writing a will, or settling the estate of someone they loved. WiseWill explains how the rules work in BC so you can make decisions, and walk into a lawyer's or notary's office knowing what to ask.
Everything here is about British Columbia. Estate law differs from province to province, and a rule that holds in Alberta or Ontario can be wrong here.
Who publishes it
WiseWill.ca is published by 1232216 B.C. Ltd., a company based in Vancouver, British Columbia.
WiseWill is not a law firm. Nothing on this site is legal advice, and using it does not create a lawyer–client relationship. For advice about your own situation, speak to a BC lawyer or notary.
How we write and check our guides
- We work from the law itself: the Wills, Estates and Succession Act, the Probate Fee Act, the Trustee Act, the BC Supreme Court's probate forms, and official BC government and court library guidance.
- We name the section. Where a rule comes from a specific part of a statute, we say which, so you can check it yourself on BC Laws.
- Calculators show their working. Each result breaks down how it was reached, and we test the math against the statute's own rules before publishing.
- Every guide shows when it was last updated.
Corrections
When we find a mistake, we fix it and update the page's date. In September 2026 we corrected two errors:
- Our probate fee pages said a mortgage does not reduce BC probate fees. A mortgage registered against BC real estate is deducted from the property's value.
- Several guides said a surviving spouse inherits everything when all the children are the couple's own. Under WESA section 21, the spouse receives the household furnishings, the first $300,000 and half of the rest, and the children share the other half.

How WiseWill is funded
Right now it isn't: there are no ads, affiliate links or paid placements on the site. If that changes, we'll say so clearly on the pages where it applies.
Your privacy
The calculators run in your browser. We don't receive the amounts or family details you enter. Google Analytics records which pages are visited and that a calculator was used, but not what you typed. See our privacy policy.
